Wrecks diving...

wreck el limon, la caleta national park

The Dominican Republic has much to offer divers,
including four wonderful wrecks at safe diving depths.

Enchanting natural cover and a beautiful background scenery awe photographers and filmmakers alike.

Your choice does not always have to be the famous Hickory, which is on the Boca Chica must dive list for many divers, as there are four wrecks to choose from. All four are located in the under water national park La Caleta of which three wrecks were purposely sunk for divers.

The fourth wreck in the southeast of the park, is a small tugboat, called by locals the "Ocean Spring", sunk under circumstances still not know today. All wrecks lie at problem-free diving depths, so that also less experienced divers can enjoy the wrecks.

With the exception of the RP 14 (Limon), due to its recent sinking, all wrecks show extensive coral and sponge growth. Large schools of fish can be found at the Hickory and Ocean Spring, which swarm around a diver when fed with bananas....

Another nice wreck, the St George, is located in the "Parque Nacional del Este" and is part of a full day excursion in Bayahibe as well as the exceptional diving in the wonderful "Padre Nuestro" cave.

Limon

The Limon has quite some fish in and around its hull, moray eels and soldier fish are calling it home along with schools of mackerels that can be found patrolling its outskirts. Evidence has shown though, how fast nature takes over a wreck.

The best example is the Hickory, a must dive for all wreck divers in the southern Dominican Republic. Those who spared air can explore the wreck´s surroundings in which sand eels are numerous. Not far from the Limon are shapely hard corals and picturesque flower corals and sponges.

Hickory

The Hickory lies tilted slightly towards its stern at a depth of 18 meters and is covered in sponges and hard corals.

Its rooms, whether above or below deck, are easy to see and they house many glass and glasseye fish. Moray eels have found their homes in the wreck´s many nooks and crannies. Soldier fish prefer the inside of the wreck, while sergeant major fish used to being fed by divers can even get on your nerves as they swarm divers. The wreck is also home to many small species and offers the photographer a great opportunity for close-up shots.
Approximately 30 meters from the wreck, one can find a canon and an anchor from the 17th century, lying here waiting for their decomposition. On the other side of the wreck lies an old shark cage. Hard, soft corals and spunges as well as sandy areas surround the wreck, which also can be interesting to investigate.

Capitan Alsina

The Captain Alsina made its last ocean voyage in 1989, which ended at the bottom of the ocean at a depth of 40 meters. It is the deepest of all of Boca Chica´s wrecks and is definitely worth the dive.

The wreck lies angled on the reef, is nicely covered in many soft corals and provides shelter to many fish, but mainly the Captain Alsina is home to a big green moray eel which has been spotted countless times in any of the wreck´s corners. At the bow´s we usually find mackerels seeking shelter. The stern lies at 40 meters from which a sand plateau extends off. The wreck´s bow is at a Depth of 26 meters. In the surroundings one can find hard corals and patches of sand in which one can usually find some kind of sea creature.

Besides the picturesque beaches enjoyed by many vacationers, Bayahibe also offers the "St. George" wreck, an 80-meter long steel freighter wreck sunk a while ago.

It´s depths range from 17 to 40 meters, thus suitable for both the beginner and the experienced diver. Two of its interior rooms are accessible to divers. At the safety stop divers often encounter curious barracudas.
